Financial difficulties led Gygax to hire the woman who would ultimately oust him from his own company. In 1984, Gygax brought on Lorraine Williams, whose family owned the copyright to the Buck Rogers comic character, to help steer TSR, Inc. back to profitability. Despite their initial collaboration, a rift developed between them. However, Williams developed an affinity for the company and its staff, leading her to quietly buy out Gygaxs partners. In a pivotal board meeting on October 22, 1985, TSRs board voted to remove Gygax as president and CEO, installing Williams in his place. She then led TSR until 1997, when the company was acquired by Wizards of the Coast, the creators of Magic: The Gathering.
