The counterweight trebuchet was essentially a giant mechanical sling operating on the principle of leverage. The throwing force was provided by a substantial weight. Such as a container filled with stones, attached to the shorter arm. When released, the weight fell under gravity, causing a rapid rotational movement of the longer arm. This longer arm had a flexible sling attached, containing one or more projectiles. These projectiles were released by centrifugal force when the lever’s movement was halted, resulting in the projectile being hurled a considerable distance.
