A gelatinous cube, also known as an athcoid, stands as one of the most feared monsters in Dungeons and Dragons. At first glance, it appears harmless, resembling a nearly invisible mass of clear, jelly-like substance. However, its perfectly cubic or rhomboid shape hides a deadly and relentless predator. Typically, a gelatinous cube measures between ten and fifteen feet on each side. Additionally, it can weigh up to fifty thousand pounds, crushing anything trapped inside.
According to legends, even larger cubes roam the deepest and oldest dungeon corridors. Moreover, this creature mindlessly patrols ruins, crypts, and underground halls in slow, predictable patterns. Although it cannot see or hear, it expertly senses vibrations through stone floors. Furthermore, it instinctively moves toward heat, making living creatures its primary targets.
As a result, unsuspecting adventurers often walk directly into its transparent body. Upon contact, the cube releases a sticky, paralyzing substance that penetrates the victim’s bloodstream. Consequently, affected creatures struggle to escape while their movements slow dramatically.
Next, acidic digestive pockets shift toward the trapped prey inside the cube. These acids rapidly dissolve armor, flesh, and equipment alike. Meanwhile, allies within five feet may attempt a risky rescue action. However, pulling a creature free requires great strength and inflicts painful acid damage. Those who survive often carry scars resembling partially melted wax. Ultimately, a gelatinous cube turns silent corridors into lethal traps, rewarding caution and punishing careless exploration.
