3i Atlas Asteroid Story
3i Atlas Asteroid is a rare interstellar comet that originated beyond our Solar System. Scientists detected it in July 2025 using the ATLAS telescope in Chile. Notably, it became only the third confirmed interstellar object ever observed. First of all, its orbit immediately caught scientists’ attention. The comet follows a hyperbolic path, so it does not orbit the Sun. Because of this, it will pass through once and never return. Moreover, it travels at an unusually high speed compared to typical Solar System comets. At the same time, 3I/ATLAS shows classic comet behavior. For example, it displays a visible coma and active gas outgassing. However, astronomers also noticed unusual jet structures and motion. As a result, researchers began intensive observations across many observatories.
