The original Dungeons and Dragons game drew heavily from previous fantasy works. One area where these influences are most apparent is in the naming of player classes. The Ranger class clearly draws inspiration from Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings. The Thief class is reminiscent of the Grey Mouser from the Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser novellas. The Barbarian class, as you might expect, is inspired by Conan the Barbarian. Lastly, the Paladin class is based on Poul Anderson s character Holger Carlsen.
