One monumental fantasy literary work that profoundly influenced Dungeons & Dragons is The Lord of the Rings. Early versions of the RPG even featured settings where players could embody Hobbits, embark on adventures encountering Ents, and confront the Balrog. However, the inclusion of Tolkiens characters led to a legal dispute when the rights holder objected. The creators of D&D ultimately lost the battle, resulting in the removal of all direct references to Tolkiens world from the game.
