Dungeons & Dragons was not initially designed as an independent game. It was first released in 1974 as an expansion pack for the popular wargame Chainmail, created by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. Surprisingly, it was a huge success, leading the designers to relaunch it as a standalone game. Over time, Chainmail began losing its fanbase as D&D took over.
