Gary Gygax, the co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons, lost his job at an insurance company in Chicago in the early 1970s. Gygax relocated his family to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, and took up cobbling to support them. Financial difficulties were such that his children had to insert cardboard into their shoes instead of buying new pairs. During his spare moments, he developed a tabletop role-playing game focused on medieval combat called Chainmail. As an addition, he included a 12-page supplement featuring wizards, dragons, and other fantasy elements almost as an afterthought. This supplement eventually evolved into Dungeons & Dragons.
