In a monumental shift for the tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) world. Critical Role Productions has recruited two titans of Dungeons & Dragons. Chris Perkins and Jeremy Crawford to join its publishing division, Darrington Press.
For decades, Perkins and Crawford were at the creative helm of Dungeons & Dragons at Wizards of the Coast, helping define the very rules and stories that millions of players around the world have adventured through. Perkins served as creative director, shaping the narrative heart of the game, while Crawford, as game director, was the architect behind its evolving ruleset. Now, the duo is bringing that legendary expertise to Critical Role.
From Web Series to TTRPG Powerhouse
Critical Role began as a humble web series featuring a group of voice actors playing D&D. But it’s since grown into a multimedia empire with animated series, comic books, video games. Now, a renewed focus on original tabletop RPG content. Hiring Perkins and Crawford signals just how serious Critical Role is about expanding its influence in the game publishing world.
Critical Role co-founder and CEO Travis Willingham called them “two of the biggest names that have influenced TTRPGs and the games that we played.” Their hiring isn’t just about experience, it’s about legacy, creativity, and elevating the entire team.
A New Chapter
Both Perkins and Crawford left Wizards earlier this year, sparking speculation in the gaming community. Perkins noted he had planned to stay until the D&D 50th anniversary before retiring. But the opportunity to partner with longtime collaborator Crawford and the team at Critical Role drew him back into the game. “This new chapter feels like coming home,” Crawford shared, citing not only his return to Southern California. Also the chance to reignite his creative partnership with Perkins in a company whose values and vision they believe in.
What’s Next for Darrington Press?
Though specific projects remain under wraps, the excitement is undeniable. Perkins teased, “Oh, heaven’s yes!” when asked if ideas were already in motion. The duo brings more than prestige — they bring a mission. In a joint statement, Perkins and Crawford outlined three core principles for their next chapter:
Diversity matters. More creators from more backgrounds means a more welcoming, inclusive industry.
Friendly experiences are key. Onboarding new generations of gamers requires accessible entry points.
Never lose the joy of play. That spark of excitement from your first RPG should stay at the heart of everything.
Critical Role a Bold Future
As tabletop gaming continues its renaissance beyond classics like Monopoly. Critical Role is betting big on original content, led by the very people who shaped the most successful RPG of all time. With Perkins and Crawford now at Darrington Press, the next great tabletop adventure might just be around the cornerand this time. Moreover It won’t require a D20 to know it’s going to be epic.
