Ernest Gary Gygax (born July 27, 1938, in Chicago, died March 4, 2008, in Lake Geneva) was an American writer and game designer, best known for his creation of the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, which he developed with Dave Arneson and published with the help of Don Kaye in 1974 under Tactical Studies Rules. Although he was not the sole contributor to the creation of role-playing games, he is commonly regarded as the father of this form of entertainment. He also designed wargames, miniature games, and board games.
